In this article we will discuss about the structure of filaria with the help of a diagram.

1. It is the most important parasite in the lymph vessels and lymph nodes of human beings causing elephantiasis.

2. Adult females measure about 10 cm. and male 5 cm. in length.

3. Colour of adult is usually creamy white.

4. The larva (microfilariae) measures about 3 cm. in length and is enclosed in a loose membranous sheath.

5. Mouth without buccal capsule and lips but with a stylet.

6. The microfilariae live in blood stream but their periodicity is very peculiar and interesting. They move into superficial blood vessels only during night and live in deeper vessels during day.

7. Intermediate host is female culex mosquito In which the microfilariae transform into adults.

8. The development of larva into adult occurs in the thoracic muscles and Intestinal walls of intermediate host.

9. Pharynx without a bursa. Body contains G1, G2, G3 & G4 cells, a nephridiopore and an anal pore.
