Read this article to learn about some of the commonly used physical quantities and its units in French System International d’ Unite (SI System).

The international nature of science demands standardization of nomenclature and units of measurement to simplify communication.

Although, formulae and labelling of biochemical generally use letters form Greek alphabet, the accepted convention for units of measurement is French System International d’ Unite (the SI system).

Following tables give some important SI units and physical constants expressed in SI terms. Since some published work also contains non-SI units so it is important to have some appreciation of inter-conversion of units for interpretation. Table 1.3.3 gives some common units and their SI equivalents.

Table: Conversion Factors Conversion of Non-SI and SI Units of Volume:

Volume of liquids used in biochemical experiments is frequently very small. They are expressed in units which are non-SI and are also accepted terms of most scientific journals. Since they are non-SI, it becomes necessary to know their conversion. Table 1.3.4 gives conversion of non-SI and SI units of volume. And table 1.3.5 lists inter-conversion of mol, mmol and µmol in different volume to give different concentrations.
